Fashion is not a progressive creativity (anymore). [Thought]

What is fashion?

A quick google would tell you,
"fash·ion
/ˈfaSHən/
noun
1. a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior."

It's a quite representable meaning. A popular trend in the dressing style of the generation and cultures. Or behavior of the individuals.

I am not a very fashion cultured person myself. To be honest, I lack in any fashion sense. I have been told many times to dress accordingly and not to dress plain(basically flannels all the time). But I don't really care about other's opinions much. Because as long as I feel comfortable and have enough mobility while wearing whatever I am wearing, I am A-Okay. I will be sharing my point of view on the topic of "Fashion". Sit back, fix your glasses(if you have of course), and enjoy reading my opinion.

Age of Consumerism

We all live in the era of consumerism. Where everyone is taught and are supposed to buy and consume as much stuff as they could in their lifetime. Even if the dependencies are not there, We are forced or made to believe that it would help us, even if we necessarily don't need it. The main impact of consumerism mentality on the civilians is the consumption of unneeded goods and services which are catered to them deliberately.

The world of advertisement and statistics had made everything easier for the companies to sell their products to "customers"; Also to convince and create the need for their products in the minds of uninterested  "customers" too. Advertisement is so much more advanced these days. That no one can escape from it. We are constantly monitored and catered to the ideas and products of trends. Thus we incline to take interest in them, and we consume unknowingly. It's a clear case of brainwashing, as we're all enslaved to technologies. That we never take a moment to think it through.
The same technique and etiquette have been followed in the Fashion industry too. Every day there is something new on the market, it's not like it's just there. But rather exclusively promoted through the cunning advertisement channels, marketing campaign, and pure hypocritical tactics. Everything is promoted to your face, there is no way around it. Social media is filled with it. The mainstream media is filled with it. The movie and music culture promotes the current fashion in their own respective fields. All these combined together flushed out the brains of billions of people daily without us knowing it. We are constantly made to believe there are reasons behind these fashions. But we may never know. The most affected generation is the new youth, who have been neutralized by the Fashion industry. They have very less or no individuality at all. They all are trying to get the same branded shirt which has an insane price tag of a common man's salary.

Fashion is not a progressive creativity (anymore)

Back in the day, Fashion actually had some usefulness or at least something to relate to culture. Like a Hat was not just a fashion statement. It was invented to protect from harsh weather conditions and so on. And what I meant by culture is; different cultures used to wear different types of garments; According to their lifestyle, geo-location, weather, etc. But now, there is no difference and usefulness in the name of Fashion. People living in hot and humid countries are wearing hoodies and coats. And people living in cold countries are wearing shorts and t-shirts. Nothing makes sense anymore.

Now that fashion is so disturbed by several factors. There is less and less creativity in it. People are not designing innovative things. They rather design different types of logos to put on T-shirts and sell them for thousands of dollars. Or tear a pair of jeans in a way to make them more attractive. And that is not a fashion statement, you should look up to.

The Price tag

Why has fashion become so expensive?. Fashion is more luxurious and a show-off of wealth now. There is nothing which anyone is gaining from the current fashion culture(Except the manufacturer and other underpaid workers). People are buying garments for no reason except to boast about their societal status and the wealth they possess.
Some of the youth are so misdirected, that their whole personality revolves and depends on these Fashion brands. And they believe that makes them express themselves. But in reality, they are just a walking advertisement and promotion for the brands who made them. The individuality of the young ones is mostly wiped out by the 'Fashion brands'.
If you look at social media, You can clearly see the bigger picture, how delusional they are. They are posting pictures of their fashion statements for validation(likes and comments) from strangers and friends. But indirectly they are promoting the brands for literally zero gains. I am not saying posting pics on social media is bad, but deliberately posting fashion-branded pics and tagging the company is just free advertising for the company.

The Real Impact

Ultimately it is everyone's opinion. Everyone has their own creative freedom and choices. But the real impact which is happening on the Environment is the one we all should look into. The rate we are eating up the trends of fashion. We will have more than enough to chew at one time. And the small nations will have to pay the most for it.
The amount of cloth per capita consumed by first world countries is beyond percentages. And the garment waste generated by these countries is dumped onto smaller nations that are trying to make living out of those waste. But the byproducts of the waste themselves have no other place to rest, so the small nations are trying to bury and burn them in landfills. And this huge amount of pollution and toxic fumes affect their health and lifestyles. It also pollutes the environment nearby for years to come.

My Personal Vendetta on the Current Fashion Culture

I personally couldn't comprehend and acknowledge the logical reasoning behind the current fashion trends. We have so-called "Fashion" which is literally a white T-shirt with a brand logo on it, and it is being sold for hundreds of dollars. I mean I get the point of demand and supply chain. But can we really call it fashion?; How could people inadvertently fell for this kind of cynical behavior of the fashion companies who rakes in millions and billions of dollars, selling fashion for such a huge margin.

I am no fashion guru, so I am assured, not everyone would agree with my opinion. But at the end of the day, everyone has their own fashion to decide and to live with. So It's up to us, with our own creative freedom.

So next time when you think of buying that new dress, shoe, or any other accessory. First, ask yourself these questions.
"What changes does that garment do to your current life ?"
"What value does it bring into your life?"
"Do you really need it ?"
And think about the impacts it has on you and your home(Earth).

These are just some of my thoughts but I have a huge amount of ideas and thoughts I want to share, so please follow me or bookmark this blog.

Thanks,

Peace out.
